Year 5

Welcome to Year 5! Our PE days will be Monday and Thursday so please ensure your child has kit in school. Homework will be set on Seesaw however paper versions will be available on request.  If you have any questions throughout the year please come and speak to a member of the Year 5 teaching team - we are always happy to talk!

Our topic this term is the Anglo Saxons. Our class text is Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo, all of our reading and writing will be based around this story.

In English, we will write our own newspapers, retell our own version of Beowulf and will create our own poems.  In our whole class Reading sessions we will focus on developing our VIPERS skills: Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explain, Retrieve and Summarise - the document below gives you examples of questions you can ask your child when reading with them at home.  We will also be revising our grammar.  Please see below the Year 5 Grammar terminology.

Read some of our amazing newspaper reports

In Maths we will be revising Place Value and then will move on to looking at the four calculations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It is important your child can recall their times tables up to 12x so please make this a focus of your learning at home - the school has paid for your child to access Times Table Rockstar at home so please ask if you do not know their login details . We also do Big Maths daily which helps improve fluency.

You will find videos to support our learning each week on the link below:
