Year 5

Spring 2

English

 

This half term the children will be looking at Classic Poetry and Classic novels as part of our Britain at Play topic. They will be learning and performing the Jaberwocky by Lewis Carroll from the Classic Novel Alice in Wonderland. They will also study the classic novel by J.R.R Tolkien - The Hobbit.

 

The children will also be studying play scripts, where they will look at language used by William Shakespeare in his famous tragedy - Romeo and Juliet. They will become actors, performing some of the key scenes.

Topic - Britain At Play

 

During this topic, the children will plan and carry out real life surveys to find the answers to questions such as; How do children spend their leisure time during the week and comparing this to how they spend their leisure time at the weekend.

They will be using their skills on Google maps to locate places of leisure and recreation in the local area. The children will also look at how sport forms an important part in British modern day society. They will be making their own sports trophy and competing in a variety of British sports; such as cricket, football, tennis and horse riding!!

 

 

 

 

Science

 

This half term we will looking at Forces.

Children will investigate the affect of air and water resistance as well as looking into friction and gravity.

Topic

Welcome to Mexico! Get ready to explore this unique country, from its towering temples and stunning geography. The children will discover the mysterious world of the ancient Maya civilisation. Make their own chocolate, learn their poetry, play their ball game and follow their curious rituals. Just try to keep your head!!

Maths

 

This half term the children will be putting their knowledge of fractions to the test!! They will be:

  • Finding equivalent fractions
  • Converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and visa versa
  • Adding and subtracting fractions with denominators that are multiples
  • Adding and subtracting mixed numbers
  • Multiplying fractions by integers
  • Finding fractions of amounts

English

 

The children will be investigating what makes a good set of instructions, through making Mars Bar Cakes, following instructions to play a variety of card games and playing playground games. They will be using their computing skills to debug errors in the algorithms! They will then be inventing their own chocolate product and writing a set of detailed instructions of how to make it.

 

The children will then investigate what makes a good persuasive letter,focusing on the arguments being backed up with opinions and facts. Then the children will look at how to write a balanced argument, whether Kukulkan should have shared the chocolate from Paradise or kept it for the Gods.

 

Children will then look at poetry around a theme... Chocolate!!

RE

Christmas

 

In this unit the children will hear about the story of Christmas through the Gospel of St. Matthew. They will explore the difficulties faced by Mary and Joseph and the tensions that arose in King Herod.

This unit explores the role of John the Baptist in the Baptism of Jesus and provides an opportunity for an in-depth study of the signs, symbols and prayers associated with the Sacrament Baptism.

Autumn 1

English

Hear and Listen well, and I will tell you a tale that has been told for a thousand years and more. It maybe an old story, yet it troubles and terrifies us now as much as it ever did, for we still fear the evil that stalks out there in the darkness and beyond. "Michael Morpurgo - Beowulf"

The children will be looking at the classic fiction story and writing as journalists about the terrifying attack on the mead-hall. The children will also have an opportunity to write the final battle scene between Grendel and Beowulf, applying the grammar they have been taught. (Prepositions and Relative clauses)

 

The children will finally study classic poetry looking at "The Walrus and the Carpenter by Lewis Carroll"

They will answer comprehension questions, make wanted posters and write the story from another point of view.

Topic - Invaders

 

Sail back to the Dark Ages, where battles were rife and fear reigned. Year 5 will find out about the life of the Saxon's, including how they lived and where they came from. The children will be designing and making Saxon shields, as well as using Saxon Runes to write their names and using Roman Numerals.
