St. Anne’s Catholic Academy
At St. Anne’s we strive to foster a love of reading in all our staff and children. We believe that reading should be enjoyable and try hard to develop children who share our beliefs.
During the early years at St. Anne’s our children learn to read with the Read Write Inc Programme. This Programme runs throughout Key Stage One. It begins in Reception and continues in Year One and is used for interventions in Year Two. The reading books sent for home learning are based around phonics; Collins Big Cats, Rigby Star, Oxford reading Tree and Treetops. As the children develop into confident readers they move away from scheme books and on to ‘Real Readers’.
In Key Stage Two the children can still access schemes like Oxford Reading Tree, Project X, Rigby Star, Collins Pathway and a variety of ‘Real Books’. As the children become confident readers a variety of books by popular authors are available like Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo, Mr Stink by David Walliams, The Suitcase Kid by Jacqueline Wilson, The Blurred Man by Anthony Horowitz, Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney and many more…
Whole Class Reading sessions explore a wide range of Fiction, Non-Fiction and Poetry. Questions set are differentiated and the children have the opportunity to discuss a variety of settings, characters and make predictions.
