Welcome to Mexico! Get ready to explore this unique country, from its towering temples and stunning geography. The children will discover the mysterious world of the ancient Maya civilisation. Make their own chocolate, learn their poetry, play their ball game and follow their curious rituals. Just try to keep your head!!

This half term the children will be putting their knowledge of fractions to the test!! They will be:

  • Finding equivalent fractions
  • Converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and visa versa
  • Adding and subtracting fractions with denominators that are multiples
  • Adding and subtracting mixed numbers
  • Multiplying fractions by integers
  • Finding fractions of amounts

The children will be investigating what makes a good set of instructions, through making Mars Bar Cakes, following instructions to play a variety of card games and playing playground games. They will be using their computing skills to debug errors in the algorithms! They will then be inventing their own chocolate product and writing a set of detailed instructions of how to make it.

The children will then investigate what makes a good persuasive letter, focusing on the arguments being backed up with opinions and facts. Then the children will look at how to write a balanced argument, whether Kukulkan should have shared the chocolate from Paradise or kept it for the Gods.

Children will then look at poetry around a theme... Chocolate!!

In this unit the children will hear about the story of Christmas through the Gospel of St. Matthew. They will explore the difficulties faced by Mary and Joseph and the tensions that arose in King Herod.

This unit explores the role of John the Baptist in the Baptism of Jesus and provides an opportunity for an in-depth study of the signs, symbols and prayers associated with the Sacrament Baptism.

Autumn 1

Hear and Listen well, and I will tell you a tale that has been told for a thousand years and more. It maybe an old story, yet it troubles and terrifies us now as much as it ever did, for we still fear the evil that stalks out there in the darkness and beyond. "Michael Morpurgo - Beowulf"

The children will be looking at the classic fiction story and writing as journalists about the terrifying attack on the mead-hall. The children will also have an opportunity to write the final battle scene between Grendel and Beowulf, applying the grammar they have been taught. (Prepositions and Relative clauses)

The children will finally study classic poetry looking at "The Walrus and the Carpenter by Lewis Carroll"

They will answer comprehension questions, make wanted posters and write the story from another point of view.

Topic - Invaders

Sail back to the Dark Ages, where battles were rife and fear reigned. Year 5 will find out about the life of the Saxon's, including how they lived and where they came from. The children will be designing and making Saxon shields, as well as using Saxon Runes to write their names and using Roman Numerals.
